Lao Cai is a border mountainous province, with the north bordering Yunnan province of China. The province is known by many popular tourist destinations such as Sa Pa, Bac Ha, Si Ma Cai, Muong Khuong with the diversification of culture both tangible and intangible. The province has a mixed topography with valleys, low and high mountainous, especially the Fansipan with a height of 3.143m, describing as the roof of the country.
Ethnic minority people in Lao Cai created and preserved hundreds of cultural and historical relics. Noteworthy are ancient carved stone relics with carvings of maps, letters and persons, which are dating back thousands of years in Muong Hoa Valley (Sapa). The relic worships Hoang Bay, a general, who defended the border in the Post-Le Dynasty, as “God defend the nation”. The Den Thuong (upper temple) worships Tran Hung Dao, the military commander-in-chief of the Tran Dynasty, built in the Le Trung Hung dynasty with dynastic title of Chinh Hoa (1680-1705). The relic of Pho Rang victory is a historical site for the resistance war against the French colonialists. Especially, Lao Cai has a system of caves with beautiful landscapes, attracting a large number of tourists to visit. They are the Thuy Tien cave (in Bat Xat), the Ta Phoi cave (in Cam Duong), the Tien-Trung Do (in Bac Ha), the Xuan Quang (in Bao Thang). Popular landscape is known as the Ham Rong – a “small Thach Lam” in Sa Pa. The site has an ancient area of stones with hundreds of blocks of stones. The Fansipan mountain – the roof of the country is a live museum of unique flora and fauna.
With 27 ethnic minority groups, the province has a diversified and rich culture both in tangible and intangible. Local people have 34 types of costumes of various colours and materials, nearly 100 folk dances and songs. Lao Cai also has numerous folk festivals, which go along with crops, religions and the nature. They are Gau Tao festival in Pha Long, Muong Khuong, Roong Pooc festival of the Giay people in Ta Van Sa Pa.
