Overview

Step back in time! Indulge serenity. La Residence Hue Hotel & Spa is an enchanting boutique hotel on the banks of the fabled Perfume River overlooking the former Imperial Citadel – once home to Emperors and now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Endowed with opulence, excellence, and warmth, this former residence of the French Colonial Governor was painstakingly restored in 2005 and redeveloped as an exceptional design hotel. The hotel’s distinctive bowed façade, long horizontal lines, and nautical flourishes are hallmarks of the 1920’s Streamline Moderne school of Art Deco architecture.

About the Destination

Hue Residence Hotel and Spa is located on 5 Le Loi Street, Hue City, Vietnam.

Hue, once the seat of power during the Nguyen Dynasty, is the cultural capital of Vietnam. There are three aspects which Hue is famous for.

The first is its history & poetry. This mysterious and somber city has a diversified and beautiful landscape dotted with numerous 19th-century ruins, royal mausoleums, temples and pagodas making sightseeing in Hue one of the most popular among Vietnamese destinations. Many famous Vietnamese poets, including some from the ruling class, came from Hue and can be found not only in the Imperial City but also in the native traditional songs.

The second is its amiable inhabitants, notably known for their laid-back lifestyles after hard working days. Friendliness, helpfulness and a genuine interest in conversing with foreigners are all characteristic attributes of the local people. Hue ladies are brought up to look after themselves and the family. If you ask any Vietnamese around the country they will tell you that the prettiest girls in Vietnam are from Hue. If you’re lucky, you can spot an iconic image of a young high school girl in the traditional white “Ao Dai” with a conical hat cycling along the fabled Perfume River.

The third is the fact that Hue is well-known for having the best cuisine due to its Imperial legacy when all the best chefs nationwide were summoned to create a large variety of dishes as the Emperors would eat dozens of different dishes at a single meal. Any Vietnamese person will agree Hue has the tastiest produce from fruit and vegetables to its seafood and this might be attributed to the city’s special climate & geography. Due to its coastal and mountainous topography, Hue and its surroundings have a microclimate which supports its paddy fields, lagoons, rivers, and forests.

Bicycling

Hue is probably the best city in Vietnam for cycling. There is less traffic than the other major cities and the people of Hue are in less of a hurry. Many choose to cycle along the banks of the slow-moving Perfume River and over the Truong Tien Bridge and into the 200-year-old Citadel where one can see the entrance to the royal Imperial City and pass by the many aircrafts and tanks from the American War before continuing deeper into the walled city where life carries on in coffee shops, motorbike repair shops, clothes shops, and hairdressers. Once you reach the end of the moat of the Imperial city you can venture further to see the ponds where women wearing conical hats in fishing boats harvest morning glory (water spinach) and snails. There are many garden houses in Hue and it is lovely to slowly cycle by to admire the intrinsic nature of these properties.

For those who would like to smell the fresh air and hear nothing but the fluttering of dragonfly wings then the countryside surrounding Hue is the answer. The central parts of Vietnam are known for their lagoons and Hue is no exception. You haven’t to go but 5 kilometers east outside of the city before you come across rice paddy fields, vegetable and flower farms, each with a separate village at its core.  If you decide to travel west out of Hue you can experience quite the opposite landscape with hilly routes to the temples, pagodas, royal mausoleums, garden houses and if you continue on you will eventually get to the bamboo forest snaking alongside the Perfume River.

Visiting Hue Citadel

Occupying a large, bounded area on the north side of Perfume River; four citadels were comprised to create the Capital City: Hoang Thanh (Imperial City) for royal palaces and shrines, Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Purple City) for royal residences, Dai Noi (Inner city) and Tran Binh Dai, which exclusively ancient architecture. Tourists are expected to spend at least one day to visit the whole complex. They can also catch a taxi, hire a bicycle, rent a “xich lo”- Vietnamese cycle if do not feel like walking around the site.

Visiting Thien Mu Pagoda

Thien Mu Pagoda is set atop a hill just outside Hue City Centre, offering breathtaking views of Perfume River and Hue Imperial City. One of its standout features is a 21 meter-tall octagonal tower called Thap Phuoc Duyen, which was built in 1844 under the reign of Emperor Thieu Tri. Meanwhile, the main sanctuary houses wooden sculptures of temple guardians, gold-plated Buddha statues, and two-tonnes bell cast in 1710. Thien Mu Pagoda was also the home monastery of Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc, who had self-immolated in 1963 in protest against the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government.

Visiting Thanh Toan Bridge

Thanh Toan Bridge is a tile-roofed footbridge that’s similar to Hoi An’s Japanese Covered Bridge, featuring ancient Chinese and Japanese motifs as well as ornate carvings of sacred animals. Built during the reign of Emperor Le Hien Tong (1740-1786), this wooden bridge is built over the Nhu Y River, spanning 17 meters in length. There’s also an altar commemorating its founder, Tran Thi Dao who was the wife of a high-ranking Mandarin in the emperor’s court. Thanh Toan Bridge, set within Thanh Thuy village, is a pleasant 20-minute drive from Hue City Centre, where you’ll pass by several traditional villages, rice paddies, and several pagodas.

Visiting Bach Ma National Park

Bach Ma National Park stands at 1450 meters above sea level, hosting majestic waterfalls, hiking trails, and dilapidated French villas. Situated in the Annamite Range, this verdant landscape is a popular retreat for locals and travelers from both cities as there are local buses stopping at the nearby Cau Hai Village for 60,000 VND for those traveling from Hue or VND 80,000 from Da Nang. Home to thousands of rare plants and wildlife, visitors can enjoy a full day (or two) of hiking, camping, rappelling, swimming and even abseiling over Do Quyen Fall.

Acommodation Dinning

Dinning in Brief

Hue is not only famous for landscape but it is also famous about culinary. Hue is the place where dining is not to satisfy human basic needs, but a form of art. Hue’s gastronomy is elegant, light and noble, different from other regions’ of Vietnam. Spices, especially chili, play an important role in Hue’s cooking and cuisine decorating art. Nowadays, consuming Hue dishes, it will be extremely interesting for everyone to know that they are trying what mostly was served to the Emperor in the past.

Besides that, the combination of French cuisine and Hue local specialties by our talented Chef, we believe that you will have awesome experiences in our luxury Restaurant.

Restaurants and Dinner

Le Parfum Restaurant

Ground Floor

Gourmet dining is serious business at La Residence and the main restaurant, Le Parfum, delivers a first-class French-Vietnamese fusion experience. In a country that doesn’t normally serve meals by courses, one look at the chef’s selection of Hue Appertiser, five elements of Le Parfum entree , or sweet egg nest dessert lovingly presented under a bamboo bird cage is enough to reveal an approach that’s on an entirely different level from the current regard for Vietnamese cuisine. For those who want to delve further into Vietnam’s varied culinary traditions, there’s an entire Vietnamese discovery selection showcasing elaborate regional delicacies.

Even in the Continental corner of the menu, where our Chef showcases his global repertoire, local references abound: pan-fried French Pigeon with sautéed chanterelle mushroom, grilled half smoked Australian Wagyu Striploin, the pumpkin soup is laced with Phan Thiet vanilla. In a six-course degustation menu, our chef takes on French cooking with Vietnamese ingredients and accompanying wines.

Le Parfum Restaurant opens for Buffet from 06.00 am to 10.00 am. Serving for Lunch and Dinner from 11.30am to 23.00, it also offers al fresco dining on the Terrace overlooking the hotel’s herb garden and the Perfume River.

Le Gouverneur Bar

Ground Floor

When visiting the former Imperial City of Hue, Vietnam, one expects crumbling citadels, peaceful pagodas, and picturesque streets; one does not expect to find a well-preserved sanctum to the glorious Art-Deco years, stocked with first-rate spirits and Cuban cigars. Oozing with 1920s elegance, Bar Le Gouverneur at La Residence Hue Hotel and Spa greets visitors with refreshing airiness and comfy, red-cushioned armchairs crafted from dark wood in the Vietnamese style. Natural light pours into the crescent-shaped space from floor-to-ceiling windows, opening up enticing views of the resort’s tropical gardens and the Perfume River.

An extraordinary mural by French artist Roland Renaud arcs across the room. When evening arrives, tall lamps and subtle lighting cast Le Gouverneur’s curved polished-wood bar and lofty ceilings in an inviting glow. French-colonial style doors open onto a raised terrace with tables overlooking the illuminated gardens. The sounds of the last boat motoring down the river and the calls of wild birds filter through to guests sipping sundowners in the evening air.

Le Gouverneur Bar opens from 09.00 am to 24.00.
